Big Boy Bed

I don't know if I'm ready for this but the time has come to convert Jorgen's crib to a toddler bed. He's 19 months old and if you ask me, not the ideal age for this kind of freedom:D However, in preparing for our second baby I thought it would be better to train him now how to not get out of bed when it's time for naptime or bedtime than to wait until our little girl is around. I think he'll do just fine, but I do worry that he will just want to get out and play every night. Any advice from you experienced mothers? I think that consistency is key so hopefully all will go well tonight!

He already flopped out of his bed today while he was playing, just after we set it up. He was doing his fast dance and power slams when he bounced out. We turned it into his first lesson - hopefully he got the cause and effect relationship there....he loves to play in his crib:O.

Maybe we should get him a pillow too - he loved cuddling this one today!

Wish us luck:)!

*Update - It's been two days and Jorgen has done so well with his big boy bed! He only got out once today when I put him down for his nap and didn't get out at all when Justin put him down for bed tonight. He's such a good kid! It's so cute to see how much he loves his new bed and we love cuddling him so close at night when we say goodnight! He gives the best, tightest hugs! We're blessed!

super nanny says.... i seriously like her stuff, but she has people just go put their kid back in bed right away over and over without talking, without cuddles, without connecting or anything but putting them back in bed and walking out and closing the door. they eventually get the idea.
it's times like that i had a video monitor to see what they do alone...

yeah shand, that is what we did tonight!! when we first said goodnight, he got up and went to the door and called out our names and when we didn't come he went to the rocker and got a book and started reading:D so i went in and picked him up and put him back into bed without a word. he got up again and came to the door so justin went in and did the same thing...and i think he got it cause he didn't do it again. perfect! we'll see how he does for his nap tomorrow :D

Let me know how it goes. If anyone can train the boy you are the one. I still remember Natalie's little fingers coming out from under her bedroom door as Craig stood there and told me something like, "you are not going to go in....she needs to learn" He was right. She did. Love you!

Way to go! We set up the crib for Davey but I didn't have the energy to do the bed thing with Anna so I just moved the port-a-crib in Lizzie's room and she sleeps there. (She never was in the crib because of the house project) Poor Anna, has never known the joy of a real mattress yet! Lately, she and Lizzie read books in the port-a-crib and they both fall a sleep together. It is pretty cute until one of them starts crying in the middle of the night and then we get up and move whoever is awake on to the bed (so I guess Anna does get the mattress occasionally). Anyways, with the rest of the kids, I can't remember much about how the transition was from crib to bed but I do remember it wasn't as difficult as I anticipated but definately not as smooth as yours has been. I do recall Rob standing outside the door, holding it shut while the toddler screamed and screamed for freedom! They must have gotten up one to many times. One trick a friend of mine uses, especially with her older kids, goes like this: Each kid gets one hall pass and one mommmy/daddy pass. That seems to cut down on the manipulation that happens at bedtime as the yahoos get a little older...drinks, food, bathroom, monsters under the bed, etc...you know, all those delay tatics kids use to stay up late!

Oh by the way, Anna loves having a pillow. They are definately big enough that you don't have to worry about suffocation.
